I’ve spent the last week or so bouncing back and forth between the hospital at the University of Virginia, home, and the hotel in Charlottesville. My father has had two surgeries on his back for persistent back problems resulting from injuries sustained while serving in the Navy more than twenty years ago. He’s doing well so far, all things considered. I can’s say so much for myself. Spending the last week surviving on a diet of fast food, soda, and snacks with physical activity largely confined to sitting on my rear while driving or waiting for this or that surgeon, doctor, or nurse has taken its toll on me. I know I’ve put on weight again, and I’ve utterly lost most of my fitness in the process. I’ve never had a great deal to begin with, so what I’ve gotten is hard-won and precious. I’ll have to start all over again when this is over. I feel like garbage as well. Humans were not meant to survive on junk food.
